The sauropod or sauropods (sauro- + -pod, "lizard's foot"), is an infraorder of saurischians. They had a very long neck, long tails, small heads (relative to the rest of the body), and very thick legs. Sauropods are remarkable for the enormous size of some species, the group including the largest animals that have ever lived on Earth. The best known sauropods are Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus, and Apatosaurus (which, according to the current classification, is a synonym for Brontosaurus). Sauropods first appeared in the late Triassic, these primitive sauropods being part of the Prosauropoda group. By the Jurassic (150 million years ago), sauropods became widespread (especially diplodocides and brachiosaurids). By the end of the Cretaceous, sauropods were almost worldwide. However, like the rest of the dinosaurs (except birds), they disappeared by the end of the Cretaceous. Fossilized remains of sauropods have been found on every continent, including Antarctica.
